Setting up an email honeypot is pretty straight forward. Really I have a honeypot by accident, but basically all you need to do is get your email address out there in obvious locations where spammers scan for addresses. This includes forums and blogs mostly. So basically spam your email and you’ll get tons of spam.. Funny right? Anyway, after you get tons of spam you’ll probably want to install comodo on a virtual machine and watch for exploits – as there are new ones all the time and there is stuff that auto executes, you can avoid that by using a gmail address or something, but you won’t be able to report on the exploits that way.

Anyway, I accidentally have a honeypot of sorts so I will keep posting spam emails on here for people as I see them pop up. It’s always interesting looking at the spam out there, so keep your eyes peeled.

So, I took a break from doing SEO work and such, but really as I noted in another post – things haven’t really changed much. Google is still full of spam and spam can get ranked by spamming. My blog gets hit more than ever with spam so I’ve dissabled comments on this blog for the most part because it’s just a pain to deal with.

This is pretty much all people do to get rank on google or other search engines.

1. Grab some low competition keywords, fill the post up with them.

2. Make some web 2.0 pages that link to the spam post with the keywords as the links to the post.

3. Run automated link spamming or hire indians to spam on blogs/forums, whatever.

4. Spam more links to the post with whatever means necessary.

5. Spam some more.

SEO still isn’t rocket science. It’s pretty freaking easy and I’m surprised things haven’t changed yet. The more “legit” way is to buy link placements on sites and such, or just write posts for other sites and get backlinks, but really it’s still all about links and people are still gaming the system more than ever. Content should be ranked based on quality not links.

I’ve started to wonder if having comments is even worth it. Most people don’t comment, the ones that do don’t have much useful information to share most of the time. Sometimes they do, but really I tend to think discussions are better off on forums.

Comment sections always have spammers even if you have all the protections in place, you’re still going to get them. Yes, even if you’re using recaptcha or similar. People from India are paid to solve these captchas. When Web 2.0 started, it really helped out spammers, because now they had tons of places to spam.

On a lower traffic site like mine, 99% of comments are spam. I do get real visitors, but they don’t really comment, as expected. So in my situation, it’s easier just to turn them off if a post is older than 7 days. If the site starts getting thousands and thousands of unique visitors per day I might enable them again. That’s not real likely with my current writing patterns and keywords, but who knows. I just write what I feel like on here and I’m not targeting anything.

I’ve been running this anti-spam plugin for a few days now because bots were bypassing my captcha by registering, or they were able to solve it. I was getting around 15 spam comments a day, maybe more.

When I first implemented the captcha, I didn’t get any spam at all really. Then the spam started to come more and more. Just think, if I had no captcha running or any other anti-spam plugin I would be dealing with 100′s of spam comments a day no doubt. WP-SpamFree has really kept it spam free so far. I wasn’t really looking for it either I just saw it in my WordPress dashboard and installed it from there. Gotta love WordPress. Be aware however that you will need to enable javascript and cookies so you can post. Most people have these on by default anyway.

If your blog is suffering a spam issue I highly recommend this plugin. I’m still going to leave the captcha in place just for extra measure, but I’m really happy to be living spam free for the time being.

Like I said, no worries I’ll just close off comments on old posts. These comments seem to be done manually so BadBehavior isn’t catching them.

I see some are cloaking their spam attempts by writing an almost genuine comment, and putting their link as some .edu profile page where it says “buy viagra here” Common tactic, I’ve seen it all before.
