So in my search for a keyboard that would put up with my relentless punishment I decided to go mechanical this time. I chose the regular edition of the razer blackwidow. Didn’t think the LED version was worth an extra $50.

Anyway, I’ve had it for a couple months and pounded it pretty hard with plenty of keystrokes. This thing is a dream to type on compared to regular dome keyboards, there’s no doubt about that. As far as games go, I’ve found it has a better response time than the dome keyboards as well. I can always tell when I press a key, and strokes are never missed like they are on dome keyboards.

The only drawback to mechanical keyboards MIGHT be the noise, but I really enjoy it because I know when I press a key. Throughout all my punishment, the thing still types like it’s brand new instead of slowly degrading like my dome keyboards have done every single time. The only thing I’ve noticed is that the WASD keys I use for FPS games have faded a bit, same with the homerow but this is a problem I’ve had with every keyboard I’ve owned. The hardest hit letters fade.

As far as this keyboard goes, I have no complaints. Some people have noticed poor quality control on razer’s part with misaligned keys and such, but mine has been rock solid. I’m so happy with this keyboard that in the future I think I’ll pick up a Das Keyboard when/if this keyboard dies. This was sort of a trial to see if I’d actually like having a mechanical keyboard – and the answer is YES. I don’t want anything else now.

Another big difference from the dome keyboards is that mechanical keyboards are very heavy in comparison.

The main thing is – mechanical keyboards are for people that type A LOT. If you don’t type a ton – you can probably just stick with a cheap Microsoft keyboard, it really won’t be much difference for you. However, for those of us that type like mad or game like mad, and destroy keyboards left and right – mechanical keyboards are for you.

I did a little research before buying this keyboard, I was wondering what the difference was betwen the Saitek Eclipse II and the Saitek Eclipse. Apparently the only real difference is that the Saitek Eclipse II has different LED colors you can choose. So, I decided to just go with the Eclipse since blue elimination is all I wanted anyway.

Getting down to it, I basically just plugged it in and it was auto-detected by Windows XP, and lit up right away. As far as looks go, it’s pretty sleek. I was more interested in overall comfort though, and this keyboard seems to be delivering me plenty of comfort with the wrist wrest at the bottom. I type A LOT so comfort is pretty important. I didn’t want any ergonomic keyboard, I’m too used to the “regular” keyboard layout to bother with anything fancy. The keys feel pretty nice and responsive. Another thing that’s nice is it blends really well with the rest of my desktop. My computer case (the Antec 900) glows blue pretty heavily, the other color being black. My mouse is black, my mousepad is black, my LCD screens are black, my speakers are black, so yea it blends really well with the rest of my desktop. The only thing that doesn’t blend is my mouse which glows green, for some reason I didn’t get a blue glowing mouse.

Enough about that though, doesn’t really relate to the product itself The illumination isn’t 100% the same over all the keys, but it’s good enough. I never look at the keys anyway, since I know exactly where pretty much every single key is anyway. I just wanted illumination because it looked cool Oh yea, and when I’m typing it doesn’t make a ton of noise, my last keyboard made much more noise when I typed.

If you’re just looking around for a nice regular keyboard that feels nice and looks sleek, this might be your keyboard

At first glance, you may think the keyboard looks unreal. It is very slim, and well, just looks kind of strange in person. However, the keyboard is actually quite comfortable once you get used to it. Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much for the price I paid for the keyboard. It has gone beyond my expectations. Things actually do feel quite sturdy and the gripping pads on the keyboard really make it quite easy to type on. I have yet to try gaming with it, however because I just now fixed my PC with my new motherboard

One thing I noticed right off the bat, I can barely hear myself type. This thing is whisper quiet. Have someone that gets annoyed living with you and your typing? Well this board might be for you.

The one thing I do not like about this keyboard is the one “shift” button seems to be in an awkward place and is small. However, this might teach me to use the correct shift button when I type which is good, because I have always had trouble with that

I would reccommend you check this keyboard out if you’re on a low budget looking for a fairly high quality keyboard. I have broken my fair share of highly cheap keyboards so I don’t buy them anymore. Usually I will spend about $60 or so on a keyboard, but I didn’t have the money for it this time. Anyway definitely check it out if you’re in need of a keyboard
