DTV: Digital TV Changeover. Finally, Clear TV.

Sunday, April 5th, 2009

I personally saw this over the weekend. I knew it would look like this, but I was still amazed. I wish this was around when I was a kid, I had to suffer through fuzzy picture and terrible audio when we didn’t have cable. Of course, you’re receiving digital data and not an analog broadcast that the television can interpret natively. If you have yet to pick up one of the digital converter boxes and you use an antenna to receive your channels, I advise you pick one up. Soon all channels will be purely digital anyway.

The picture will come in 100% clear, there is no fuzziness. The only thing you may notice is that some parts of the picture may have blocks in it or the picture will freeze. This is because some of the data is missing from the stream. Still, I much prefer blocks in the picture over being fuzzy. On top of this, due to the channel using much less bandwidth, you can have channels within channels. So, you may have 3-4 or more different channels on the same channel, because there is plenty of bandwidth available now.

Even though I was expecting this digital move to look the way it does, I was still amazed to see it in person. I have NEVER seen an antenna received channel look so clear. Analog cable looks worse.

If you’re looking for a portable hand held digital television, they are somewhat expensive, and selling like hot cakes. This was the only one I was able to find in stock right now. I’m sure they’re really cool to have around though :) Your old portable televisions will no longer work once the deadline takes effect for all stations to go digital. I would buy one myself if I had the cash just to play around with it :)
