Self hosting is still the best. I moved away from Blogger more than a year ago and have no regrets.

I have "unlimited" everything basically. I know there's a limit somewhere though :P Costs me about $40/year, the domain is another $15, so closer to $60 total per year.

I had a long time of not paying attention to the .whatever blogs.... - BUT - some are made in such a great way - I am not even noticing the .whatever part of it anymore....
Lucky; cause there are some real great sites !!

I am paying a host and my domain; cost me 25 euro per year; 3 gb space - 60gb of traffic per month (wish I needed all that traffic bandwidth... lol) allowed AND with a control panel with "out of the box" software. The easiest way to install and update progs like WordPress.

Sjeltur’s last blog post..Maintenance Mode Plugin; working on your WordPress site

Of course, an owned domain is always superior to a subdomain, such as blogspot or wordpress. I was merely arguing that those blogs can be quite successfull if the content is worthwhile, in combination with a presentation that isn't generic.

Some .whatever blogs remind me of myspace. I think that's why I usually would not give them any notice if I fell on one through a search engine.

In my opinion, the main problems with .whatever blogs is the cookiecutter themes and the serious widget overload.
They aren't inherently bad by default, as blogs in general, but they always seem to lean toward bad blog practices for some reason. After a while, I started to expect all bland, green and blue dotted themed blogs to have terrible content... just like the last few hundred I've seen.

Well, yes it does. They are still losing visitors. Before I started a blog, I would have never in a million years visited a blog not hosted on its own server and had its own domain. I have just now realized that content on blogspot etc is good, depending on the author.

So personally, when I saw a sub domain, I ran away. I believe there are others that are like me as well.

I think ads make the blog look less professional more so than a subdomain ever would, as well as the theme of the blog, visually. I know of plenty blogspot blogs that have exuberant amounts of traffic, and the subdomain has no hinderance on anything in their defense.
