Ever want to get out of paying $1 per bottle of carbonated water? Well you can, and as it turns out, it’s pretty easy. I just purchased a kit off eBay that had a 20oz paintball CO2 tank, a regulator, and the correct soda cap. It was pretty cheap as well, around $130 shipped. The paintball CO2 tank can be filled at many places for around $5, it lasts for about 40 – 60 2 liter bottles, depending on how carbonated you make them.

Generally, if I drink 1 2 liter per day it’ll last a month and a half. I make them very carbonated though, about what you’d get from the store. One note is I push the PSI higher than you probably should, 50PSI, I found that if I put it lower it wouldn’t get carbonated quickly enough for my liking. However, this will vary depending on how cold the water is that you’re trying to carbonate.

How To:

1. Fill 2 liter bottle with water, leave some space at the top.

2. Carbonator attachment on bottle has a pin on top, push it down and squeeze the bottle to remove excess air.

3. Attach hose to carbonator by pulling up on the attachment and pushing down.

4. Screw down pin on co2 tank until you feel it pushing down on the tank’s pin.

5. Adjust PSI on regulator until it’s at 30 – 35PSI (Or higher, depending on how cold the water is in the bottle, 50PSI works best but not recommended by most.)

6. Release Co2 via the red lever on the side.

7. Shake bottle for 60 seconds or so.

8. Turn off the co2, unscrew the valve, remove attachment from carbonator.

9. Remove carbonator from bottle and enjoy freshly carbonated water.

Soda requires different steps, I haven’t done it so I don’t know. This process might seem complicated, but it’s really easy after you’ve done it a few times, and it saves a bundle of $ very quickly if you drink a lot of it. Personally, I drink it on and off but when I’m in the mood I drink 1 – 2 bottles in a day.

So there you go.. Quick, easy & cheap carbonated water. Forgive me if I’m using incorrect terms to describe the components Kit can be found at KegConnection.

1. Read read and read some more. If you’re new to technology this may seem overwhelming. Technology, whether it be programming, computers, gadgets, etc, you need to read up on the subject. Once you get used to using more advanced/technical devices, you will find that keeping up with changes in technology is not that difficult. More advanced reading will require specific forums, for things such as modification or “hacks”.

2. Get help if you need it. Use forums! If you have an issue with something, why not make use of forums? They are free support. Generally there is a forum for every niche in the technology realm.

3. Read books. If you are studying a particular device, and trying to make a technical modification there are probably books available for it. An example would be Xbox modification.

4. Use your imagination. If you want to make a device do something it’s not intended for, find out if it’s possible. Chances are if it’s possible someone has already done it.

5. Stick to it. The old saying applies. “If at first you don’t succeed try, try, and try again.”

Some people may not realize that the Internet is FULL of information that you sometimes have to dig for. I mentioned a few times that FORUMS are probably the most wealthy in free knowledge on advanced, specific subjects. Don’t forget blogs though, they have also been useful for me when I’m dealing with specific issues. This blog was primarily started to *hopefully* provide easier access to some information that I have dugg up from forums.

Well, if you remember my old GA-P35-DS3L failed. ( http://technologyinsanity.com/insanity/the-ga-p35-ds3l-has-failed/ ) I had to get a new motherboard. So, how hard is it to replace one? Probably about as hard as building from scratch

*Note* Always ground yourself by touching the metal case of the computer or using a grounding wrist band.

First of all you have to remove everything connected to the motherboard. That includes the PCI/PCI-Express/AGP cards, the IDE/Sata cables, case cables, and the power cables. Once that’s done, you must unscrew all the mounting screws used to keep the motherboard in place. They are located in many different areas on the board. Once you’re done, you should be able to gently lift the motherboard out of the case.

(This is how my case looked after I removed the motherboard. )

The next step is to remove the heat sink and fan from the old motherboard. The removal process should be documented if you have a stock heat sink/fan, or if you have an aftermarket cooler you should be able to look it up. The removal process will vary.

Once that’s done, you’ll have to remove the CPU, or processor from the old motherboard. There’s generally a latch by the cpu socket that you have to push down and then up to release the CPU. Place the CPU into the new motherboard and pull the latch down. Some older processors have pins on them so you should be careful. The next thing you’re going to want to do is remove the ram sticks from the old motherboard by pressing down on the release latches. Move them to the new motherboard as well, press them firmly into the memory socket.

(Processor and Ram moved to new location)

The next thing you want to do is wipe off the old thermal paste and create a mirror finish on the top of the processor. Then reapply artic silver, or some other kind of thermal paste.

Next, you will also want to create a mirror finish on the heat sink and attach the heat sink to the new motherboard.

With that done, it seems it’s time to move the motherboard over to the case and mount it with the screws taken off the old motherboard. Then, all that needs to be done is to attach all the PCI/PCI-Express/AGP Cards, connect the power, and IDE/Sata cables. Not quite finished yet. There are some little wires hanging off your case you’re probably going to want to connect again to your case, otherwise your power button isn’t going to work Look up the pins for the connector in your motherboard manual. Then, hit the power switch

Next you’ll probably have to reinstall Windows or whatever OS you choose. You can backup your data by using a Linux LiveCD and copying them to a flash drive or another hard drive. You could also try following this guide: Replace Your Motherboard Without Killing Windows

Hopefully this will prove useful to someone out there

So I get asked this question a lot, and I’m tired of explaining it. Leeching various (legal) things from IRC is not difficult. So, let’s get started.

Introduction

IRC, or Internet Relay Chat has been around for ages, and many still use it today. If you don’t use it, you’re missing out. This is not a Yahoo chat, nor an AIM chat. Most channels are controlled by bots. (Programs placed on servers) These bots do various things such as automatically banning spammers, holding the operator position in the channel, or maybe even trivia. There are also other kinds of bots, one is called an XDCC bot. They are in certain channels where you may download various things.

What’s needed

First, you’re going to need an IRC client. This could be mIRC, which is probably the most popular, XChat, Irssi, or anything else that connects to the IRC protocol and has DCC (Direct Client to Client) functions. I am going to use XChat for the example, because it pretty much works well with transfers right out of the box.

Start up XChat, click do not display this message again when the first pop up box shows up. Exit out of that.

Basic commands

/server irc.xxxx.tld – Sets the irc server you wish to connect to. (Example /server irc.technologyinsanity.com)

/join#channel – Lets you join a channel while connected to a server. (Example /join #technologyinsanity)

/msg USER <message> – private messages a user on the network you’re connected to. (Example /msg s0uThp4rk what’s up?)

Network Services

Some may require you to register with nickserv or get a vhost (a virtual host, which would be s0uThp4rk@the.cow.com instead of s0uThp4rk@myip.resolvedhost.tld)

In such cases, here are some basic commands for that.

/msg nickserv register <password> <email>

Then, generally you will join #vhost and send the message !vhost your.vhost.tld

Requesting Packs

In order to request a pack from an XDCC bot, you must be in the channel that has such bots, and meet the requirements for the bot if there are any. You may use an XDCC search engine such as packetnews.com or xdccing.com. I would not recommend you use these websites without adblock plus enabled. You can then click on the pack or one of the other links and it will try to automatically open XChat and join the channel. An alternative would to idle in a channel and request a pack you want when you see it. You could also install a script to “catch” xdcc packets and request them from a window within the script.

The general command for requesting a pack is:

/msg <botname> xdcc send #<packnumber>

Then you have to accept the send, or wait in queue until an open slot is available. You can also set xchat to automatically accept sends in the preferences.

Conclusion

That should be about it for this introductory. Instead of leeching things from xdcc channels, maybe you would rather chat? Check out my channel at irc.technologyinsanity.com #technologyinsanity

Packs on XDCC. These are not legal, however..

If you haven’t already, you should really switch to permalinks. /?p= is an unfriendly, unSEO link. Go to your settings –> Permalink and set custom like this /%category%/%postname%/

Okay, so at first glance that seems easy enough right? Well yeah.. Not so much. First of all, I had to enable mod_rewrite in apache. (Remember I’m on a VPS) That wasn’t difficult, you just use the command a2enmod on Ubuntu/Debian systems. Now with that done, I could use the .htaccess file generated by WordPress to serve up the new fancy URLs. Wait.. My old /?p= are not being forwarded to the new fancy urls. Well, a simple plugin called Permalink Redirect solves that issue.

Now comes the real fun. Everytime I go to try and access my stats, I get a 404. The stats folder is clearly there, but I cannot access it. So, I remove the .htaccess on that folder. I can now access it, but it’s no longer password protected I really wasn’t sure if this was caused by ISPConfig or the .htaccess.

So I searched around for quite some time. The solution is simple, when you go to a password protected area it looks for the 401 and 403 error files first, before giving you a login prompt. With the new rewrite in place, all the errors are now on the WordPress theme. It doesn’t have these errors, so the resulting error is 404 not found.

Anyway, how do you fix this issue? Simple, add the following lines to your .htaccess file in the root directory.

ErrorDocument 401 /[path_to_file]/myerror.html

ErrorDocument 403 /[path_to_file]/myerror.html

That’s it! Problem solved. I can now access my stats directory with the password, and permalinks are working.

When I’ve contacted them about something, I get a response within 20-30 minutes. So, mostly I’ve had no issues, and the loading time for my site is fine. It acts up a little, but not much, not any more than what you would expect from a shared host.

They offer a sort of gimmicky sign up, with unlimited everything, I’ve yet to find that limit, but perhaps I will some day if I get too much traffic.

I admit, I’m a noob when it comes to web hosting, and there’s so many options out there I basically just chose one. My experience has been limited to playing with MySQL databases and PHP on free hosts.

Recently, I found this information about JustHost here.

Apparently, they went as far as to create a fake website with them at the top, here. If you look at the website, JustHost.com you see that they are proudly displaying their fake badge.

I found this more comical, than upsetting really. Like I said, for my purpose I don’t really care so long as it “works”.

It seems as if a lot of shared web hosting providers are using the same tactics, so it’s nothing new. (well, it’s new to me) Hopefully someday I will be able to go on a dedicated host, I’m really not impressed with shared hosts, not JustHost specifically, but all of them. I may be on a dedicated host sooner than I think, because my traffic has been increasing day by day. Perhaps I’m just giddy and want to try out a dedicated host. I wish I could, but I’m not sure I can afford it. I might try out a cheap dedicated host in the near future for a month or two.

I’m posting this in the tutorials section as well, because I believe it is a tutorial to understanding shared host gimmicks.

I have Windows XP installed on my D: drive and Windows Vista installed on my C: drive. I’ve edited the cfg files and moved some boot files for XP over to the C: drive, so I could choose between XP and Vista at start. My problem was, I wanted LINUX as well. Apparently I’m behind the times with Linux, because Ubuntu has something called Wubi which was PERFECT for my situation. All I had to do was install Wubi. That’s it, no complex partitioning, no messing with boot loaders, nothing. Easy. I still use the Vista bootloader to either boot XP, Vista, or Ubuntu.

Ubuntu is installed on my C: drive with Vista. It does not interrupt the NTFS file system. No partitions, oh how they have caused me problems in the past. What’s more, you can just uninstall Wubi like it’s a windows program. SO EASY. I can’t believe how EASY it was. I never had anything so EASY to work with when I was first doing my dual boot configurations. I just can’t beleive how far things have progressed behind my back

So, if you want a completely AUTOMATED dual boot configuration with Linux, Wubi is MOST DEFINITELY your choice. I only wish Slackware had an option like this. Sorry for my over emphasis of how EASY it was, but I’m just dumbstruck at how EASY it was.

Next stop, quad boot. I don’t think this will be as easy

I know a lot of people still run their wireless routers without any encryption whatsoever. You really shouldn’t do this. Why? Well, there are some people that use wireless networks to do malicious things. Maybe they’ll do a little hacking on your network, maybe buy some things with stolen credit cards, the list goes on. People with insecure networks often have the default password on their router, therefore anyone connecting to your access point can access your router! They could also be using packet sniffers sniffing out data you’re putting on the Internet. If you have a bandwidth cap, they’re stealing bandwidth you could be using.

Why leave yourself open to these kinds of threats? Generally all it takes is WEP encryption, which isn’t the most secure, but secure enough that most people wont touch it. Most router addresses are 192.168.1.1, some are a little different. You can look up these details on the Internet if you don’t have the manual handy. Just go into wireless security, WEP, enter a passphrase, generate, and select a default key. Then when you connect, insert that key to get onto your network. Simple as that.

Back when I was a wardriver, I found that almost 80% of wireless networks in my area were insecure. That percent may have changed, but I still see a lot of insecure networks out there. It’s unacceptable!

This has to be one of the easiest crackme’s I’ve found, it’s called Diablo’s Orion crackme 1. The only way you could really fail is if you have no knowledge whatsoever. The problem is, some programs protections are just as simple. Anyway, we want to load up the program in ollydbg.

Then we hit play, the screen comes up asking for a code.

That’s good, lets give it a code. I’ll put something random like cheesepie, and hit Ok.

Now I’m going to pause the program in ollydbg by hitting the “pause” button in ollydbg. Then I’ll just view all the calls made through the call stack.

Let’s go to 00439002 and set a break point at PUSHEBP, the beginning of the command. (By double clicking on the line in the dissembler) Now I’m going to press play on the program and try entering my code, cheesepie again. Bam! It breaks on my break point.

What’s this? The registers already say “Wrong Code! Try again”. OK well I think it’s time to go back to the call stack and see if there’s something before that.

There is. Let’s go to 004016EC.

Again, I’m going to set a memory break point at the top of the command at PUSHEBP. I’m going to get rid of my old break point by accessing the B (Breakpoints) in ollydbg. Just looking through the code I see something interesting. It seems there’s some ASCII text possibly being compared to something. Still, I’m going to rerun the program and break on my new break point.

It looks like there’s a JE coditional jump that would give me the happy message, so I could probably just change this line to “jmp” which just jumps always over the unhappy message. So I could do that, but I’m not going to bother. The code is for the crackme is actually standing right in front of me, so why not use that.

***vErYeAsY*** is the code.

It also goes on to show a naked woman after you hit ok so if you’re offended by that I don’t think you should try this crackme. It took me all of 5-10mins to get past this kind of protection, therefore I’m calling it preschool stuff. If you’re interested and want to learn more, I suggest you head over to tuts4you.com and do Lena’s tutorials. I’ve done them all myself, but I feel like I need to do them again to be honest. I only reverse for fun, there’s many like me out there.

A goal of mine is to someday be able to reverse trojans/malware because I find them very interesting. That kind of thing could be done with IDA Pro or in a VMWare box, I’m guessing. They’re usually packed and spliced with something, and unpacking I’m not so good at, but that’s a major thing in reversing.

You should know that people that are doing 300 Drops a day (like myself ) are not manually clicking through entrecard. Some have lists of people made up for their drops. My method is a little different, and I think maybe a little better, I don’t know. Timing is also important, the best time to drop is 12AM eastern. I don’t do this all the time, but I do it when I can. I need sleep just like everyone else Depending on the times of my drops, I might just do today’s or I might do today’s and yesterdays. This is because when I drop at midnight, I know I won’t be missing anyone that dropped me that day. When I drop at 4PM or so, I would be missing people that dropped me the day before. Below is a short tutorial to show you how to get 300 drops done in about 20 minutes.

NoScript

NoScript is a plugin for FireFox that blocks all scripts on pages. You have to disable script blocking on entrecard.com and amazonaws.com

Next, you have to MAKE SURE that temporarily allow top-level sites by default is clicked. It was blocking entrecard still and I wondered why, this option makes that problem go away.

Firefox Settings

Go to Tools>Options>Content and add exceptions entrecard.com and amazonaws.com to the “Load images automatically” option. Then disable that optioin. Also uncheck “Enable Java”.

Linky

Linky is a plugin for firefox that allows you to select links from a page. First, what I do is go into my drops inbox and select all the people who have dropped me. Then I use linky to open all selected links in tabs.

I also drop randomly a lot, so I just go into campaign, select all the links in “New” , “Cheap” , or “Random” for about 12 rows. The only issue I have with that is I have to manually uncheck the details link, but I’ve been thinking about making an autoit script for that. The amount of tabs you can have will probably depend on how much RAM you have in your computer.

Note that I still browse blogs and drop comments after I’ve dropped my cards. I highly doubt anyone who drops 300 cards is doing everything manually, that would take an eternity I wouldn’t have anytime to blog or work on my site.

Let me know if I missed anything, this should be very similar to other guides out there, but I use linky instead of some other things people do. I have to thank nukeit.org for linky, I believe he mentioned it in one of his blog entries.
